Ethical and hand engraved custom signet rings
Signet rings are derived from the Latin word ‘signum’ meaning ‘sign’. Signet rings were first created for religious leaders and Pharaohs. These rings were used to mark documents by pressing the face into hot wax and closing envelopes with a unique family crest seal engraving.
Today they are commonly passed down as family heirlooms, especially for those with Celtic backgrounds, and have also risen as a fashion statement with their resurgence as a ‘gentleman’s trend’ – and we love it!
Here’s everything you need to know about our custom signet rings. And don’t let “tradition” stand in your way ladies! Signet rings are for women too and we can create signets of all shapes and sizes to suit your taste!
Choose your ring shape
Our first step in the design process is choosing the ring shape for your custom signet ring. Choosing your ring shape is completely up to you. However it can be good to keep in mind the design of the hand engraving or any stones you may wish to embed, so the shape best supports your desired custom signet ring design.
Choose your precious metal
When it comes to our signet rings we have a lot of different precious metals. Choose from sterling silver, brass, yellow gold, rose gold and white gold. Your choice is of course determined by style but also by the hardness of the ring and how many buffs or scratches the ring will experience. Check out our guide to precious metals to get more details on the benefits of each type of metal.
You may also wish to have a stone set in your custom signet ring. We’re a big fan of salt and pepper diamonds, sapphires and other gemstones or you could opt to include a special birthstone.
Custom signet ring design process
When it comes to designing your custom signet ring it’s great to come to your consultation with a vision in mind and reference pictures. If you’re artistic, sketches and illustrations can be helpful too. Perhaps you have a family crest, or have discovered a family heirloom or full coat of arms that you want to be engraved into your signet ring – whatever your vision we’ll get the process started with you to create your signet showstopper.
Perhaps you want a stone set? Bring it into our team with your consultation and we’ll see what we can do to incorporate it into the design.
If you’re looking for a highly intricate design and deeply imprinted, we may create a CAD design piece for you to review and sign off before we get crafting.
If you’re dreaming of an engraved or stamped piece, we’ll discuss your reference image and once we settle on the exact reference image, we get straight to work!
Next, we explore how the engraved ring will look.
Engraving your signet ring
Body: The process of engraving is different for each ring, some involving laser engravings, others created with the support of a highly skilled master engraver, others created with an imprint. We’ll stay in touch with you through the process so you know when it’s under way and ready for you to pick up.
Reminder: custom signets take from 4 to 6 weeks from the point of payment to the completion of the ring.
Caring for your custom signet ring
When it comes to cleaning your signet ring, we recommend a gentle brush with a soft toothbrush (think: kids toothbrushes) and mild, soapy warm water. Then rinse in clean water and dry with a soft rag or polishing cloth.
